McMenamins Edgefield Brewpub, Winery & Theater

On a random weekday, we spontaneously decided to take the day off and go play. We decided to go somewhere we had never been to and drove 1 hour to Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon, only about 15 miles East of Portland. The McMenamins Edgefield is a historic 72-acre farmland turned into a destination resort encompassing a hotel, restaurants and bars, a movie theater, spa, a winery and more.

Just 20 minutes from Portland you can find this amazing place at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area, with original buildings restored with cozy and whimsical interiors, gardens grown using organic methods, great food and drink, live entertainment and more.

There are lots to do around here, but on this trip we partook in having lunch and drinks at the Power Station brewpub, watching a movie at the Edgefield Theater and enjoying some really good Edgefield wine at the Tasting Room.

Power Station Theater & Pub

The Power Station Brewpub is one of the many dining options at Edgefield.

Back in 1911 when the property used to be the Multnomah County Poor Farm, this building served as the laundry and power facilities. Now it welcomes people to enjoy casual pub fare for lunch and dinner featuring handcrafted ales brewed on site.

In the summertime, the Power Station expands outdoors to the Loading Dock Grill, adjacent to the Edgefield Brewery for wonderful patio dining.

Edgefield Movie Theater

In the same building, the McMenamins Edgefield Movie Theater is located, which offers family friendly movies and food and table service starting 45 minutes before each showing.

We only had 1/2 hour before the movie started when we arrived for lunch, so we started by ordering and eating at the bar in the pub and then moved our food and drinks to the tables inside the theater.

Josh enjoyed his turkey sandwich and two different beers, and I enjoyed my tuna sandwich and one seriously thick and delicious chocolate milkshake. We also ordered side salads and tater tots to share. Check out the theater menu.

We tremendously enjoyed watching The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at this theater.

During a few minutes in the middle of the showing we could hear this loud hail coming down outside and on the roof. By the time the movie was over, we went out to see sunshine.

While exploring the grounds, we spotted the Black Rabbit House, a teeny-tiny pub (big enough to host about 3 or 4 people) is open seasonally to enjoy handcrafted ales, wine and spirits in a cozy and unique environment.

The McMenamins Edgefield Wine Tasting Room

As we kept exploring, we came across a sign that said wine tasting and we decided to follow it. As soon as we walked in the Tasting Room we enjoyed the atmosphere.

They offer four different tasting menus to choose from starting at just $6; a flight of red, flight of white and sparkling, flight of fortified, and flight of classics.

Our wine tasting server/bartender… not sure what to call her… had been working there for 20 years and was extremely knowledgeable. She described those wines like a pro.

I opted for the “Classic Favorites” ($6) tasting flight and Josh opted for the “White and Sparkling” ($7) flight.

The McMenamins Edgefield Tasting Room also offers free, live music by candlelight several nights a week.

The tasting fee is waived if you purchase a bottle of wine, and we went home with one from each flight. The Black Rabbit Red, my favourite, and the Pinot Noir Blanc, a rosé.

The Black Rabbit Red became my new favorite wine and I ought to go back and get some more. The rosé tasted better at the tasting room, sometimes that happens. These wines would also make great hostess/host gifts. Click this link for more ideas of gifts for wine lovers.

Maybe next time we’ll try out the Spa and soaking pool, the Tea House and the Black Rabbit Restaurant. It would also be fun to attend one of their concerts on the lawn. This place has so much to offer!
