How To Make Money When You Travel Long-Term

Those of us with wanderlust, dream of a life where we can travel for months on end with no strings attached. However, the reality is that the money for all those plane tickets needs to come from somewhere. Few are lucky enough to be inherently wealthy enough to just travel without worrying about an income. But it’s those with a lower budget that have the better sense of adventure. Thankfully, if you look hard enough, there are plenty of ways to make money when you travel.

Work in a Bar or Restaurant

If you are planning to stay in one spot for an extended period of time, one popular option is to find paid work in the area where you are staying. In countries like New Zealand and Australia, it is extremely common for backpackers to pick up work at restaurants, bars, and even cafes for a couple of months before moving onto the next destination.

In some cases, you may also be able to work at a hostel in exchange for free accommodation. One of my close friends did that at a hostel in Prague. Free accommodation means that you can save your entire paycheck for the next adventure. Be sure to check your visa limitations before seeking work. However, working in town can be a great way to not only make a few bucks, but also interact with the locals.

Create a Blog or Vlog

Another popular way to make money when you travel is to write a blog or create a video blog. Many globe-trekkers are turning to the world of blogging to share their stories and make some money along the way. Successful bloggers usually make their money through advertisements or through written product promotion. However, others make their money through donations.

To be a successful blogger, it’s best to create your own niche and write or talk about something that makes your blog unique. While it may seem overwhelming with the number of blogs already out in the world, the internet always has space for more. It may be a good idea to start creating your blog or vlog before your travels actually begin since it can take time to build and audience and start actually earning money off your blog.

Tutor Online

In the age of the internet, it has become easier and easier to interact with people from every corner of the planet. However, did you know that you can use this power to tutor online? Online tutoring has become a popular way for many people to learn English. With websites like Cambly, Palfish, and Nicetalk, you can interact with people from all around with world and help them learn English simply through conversation. You can also tutor subjects like Calculus, Environmental Science, and more through sites like Chegg.com. Many of these tutoring sites allow you to earn $10-$25 per hour all while sitting at your computer screen.

Try the Online Casino

Are you willing to try your luck at the slots, but don’t want to plan a trip to Vegas? This may seem like an odd choice to make money but luckily, online casinos are becoming more popular for those that have Lady Luck on their side. Sites like Slots Daily can allow you to find a number of online slot machines. If you have luck on your side and are willing to live with an element of risk, you can earn money from the comfort of your hostel or hotel room no matter what country you are traveling in. That next plane ticket might be one spin away!

Be a Freelancer

If you are an excellent writer or have a good background in computers, another option to consider is freelancing. Anyone with access to a computer can write, edit, translate, or even enter data from any corner of the world. Websites like Textbroker and Upwork allow you to use your skills to earn money even as you hop on the next plane.

Many of these sites pay you per word to write articles about a whole menagerie of topics. Editing jobs are also easy to come by if your grammar skills are good enough. If you are the creative type, freelancing can be a great way to earn money doing something you already enjoy. This is one of my favourite ways of making money.

While many of us lack the resources to be able to travel without concern for finances, it is becoming easier every day to find work online to fund your adventures around the world. If you are willing to take the time to work for a local business, keep a blog, or find online work, it can be extremely feasible to earn money while you travel. If you are resourceful enough, you can find work that helps your trip pay for itself.
