Weekly Small Pleasures #126

So this week I was checking out an acoustic duo (Jenny & Tyler) on Spotify and suddenly they were singing about Christmastime. And then another Christmas song came after that. Apparently, I reached their Christmas album. I admit I let a few songs play before moving on to a different band. So, that’s my first Christmas music of the season. I’m excited about Christmas. I always am because it has always meant a happy time in my life, even during hard times.

Once summer is over, holidays begin and very quickly Christmas comes. I am not a fan of Halloween so I always look forward to November when it’s chilly and it’s not too early to put up the Christmas tree. Our new apartment has a fireplace, so I’m super looking forward to lighting it.

Anyway, this week brought several different small pleasures:

1. Doctor Who

Last weekend I bought season 10 of Doctor Who to stream on Amazon video. It was a very decent price and the Amazon x-ray feature is fun. We were able to watch 3 episodes in a row! It seemed a record for me since having a newborn; she was awake half the time and slept through the other half. Watching this show is always a pleasure. I’m kinda sad I’m almost caught up because then it means a lot of waiting between new episodes and seasons.

2. Back to normal in some ways

During my pregnancy, hormones caused me to have butter hands and worse vision. I would drop so many things and I had to wear my glasses way more than pre-pregnancy. Now I’ve realized those two problems are gone. But pregnancy brain (forgetful and absent-minded) didn’t go away and has become mommy brain. My memory is still suffering. Could be hormones but probably mostly because of my new sleeping schedule.

E.g. I was in the kitchen after being in the laundry room and a couple minutes later I went back to the laundry room because I realized I forgot to start the washer after putting the clothes in. But on my way there I heard it doing its thing and realized I did not forget to start it. So,  I forgot that I didn’t forget.

3. Baby smiles

This is still my new favorite thing. I can’t get enough of them.

4. Brownies

I made brownies this week! Yay. Yum. Always a pleasure.

5. My weekly outing

We still haven’t wanted to go out and about with the baby in part because her immune system is still building and in part because I’m nervous about dealing with a nursing baby in public. So, since a couple weeks ago, once a week I leave the baby with dad and I go out and do stuff. Mostly grocery shopping even though we can order. I still order groceries online every week but I can’t order from Trader Joe’s. So in my last outing I actually went to three places: Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, and to get some takeout for lunch. It’s always nice to get a breath of fresh air, have time to myself, and blast the radio in the car.

6. First nature walk

This week I ventured out with baby on arms and we went for our first walk in the outdoors. There’s a trail near our apartment which unfortunately has a steep rocky entrance unless I want to get there around the long way. I took it when I was pregnant and was afraid to slip, and now I’m afraid to slip while carrying the baby. Even though I was careful I slipped with a loose rock but didn’t fall.

Anyway, the walk was lovely! The temperatures are finally dropping aka it’s not 100 degrees anymore. She’s still too young (7 weeks) to appreciate or understand anything outside but she thoroughly enjoyed her nap while I enjoyed the sunshine, the breeze, and the water creeks. Definitely recharged my soul and improved my mood. I hope I can find the time to do it more often.

7. Baby slept through the night

She had been sleeping for 5 hours during the first stretch of the night, but this week she skipped her 2 am feeding twice! She slept from 9pm – 5:30 am and again from 9 pm-4:30 am. It’s still rough to have to wake up that early, plus she sleeps in our room and she’s a loud sleeper, and the whole time I’m anticipating when she’ll actually wake up with hunger. So it’s not the best sleep, but I’ll take it!
