Whether you’re packing for a vacation, business trip, or visiting family it can seem like a bit of a minefield when it comes to sorting out the essentials to take, especially for your carry on luggage.
You need to make sure you have everything you need and still abide by the airline rules and regulations for safe travel. Plus, there always seems to be something we forget, lose, or on occasion, our stuff can get stolen and let’s face it, airport purchases are expensive.
You should try to always plan ahead, have a look at some of the things you should be thinking about taking with you as carryon luggage:
Foldable Water Bottle
Airplane travel is thirsty work and purchasing water in the airport or on a plane can be extremely expensive. A great solution is to take a collapsible water bottle with a filter that can be filled with tap water once you’ve passed through security. Usually fine without a filter, as you’ll always find water fountains in airports.
It mustn’t contain any liquid before security as you will need to discard it. Even when filled you will find that these handy bottles take up less room than a standard plastic bottle, plus they’re brilliant for taking out and about when you’ve reached your destination too.
Documents You’ll Need For Your Trip
It’s a good idea to make sure you keep any documents that you require for your entire trip on your person and in your carry on luggage when traveling. This is just in case anything happens to your suitcase in transit. If your case goes missing at least you still have your important information for your travels. Whether it’s a screenshot on MacBook, tickets that have arrived in the post or a hotel confirmation that you’ve printed, having these to hand can save a lot of hassle.
Some people enjoy things such as people watching, plane watching, daydreaming, and then are lucky enough to get a window seat; however, the majority of us require some sort of entertainment while traveling.
It’s a good idea to pack a book, magazine, bring your tablet or another source of entertainment in your carry on luggage. These kinds of things can be very expensive at the airport so be careful if you plan to purchase once you’re there.
As with the documentation you need for your travels it’s probably best to take any medications and supplements in your carry on too, it eliminates the risk of them going missing if your checked luggage goes walkabout.
It can often be impossible to get the exact medication when away from home. In addition to your prescription medication, you should think about packing any over-the-counter medications you might want during your flight too. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be handy for headache or backache. Pepto Bismol and Alka seltzer could be lifesavers when it comes to tummy troubles. Ginger candies can also work great for upset stomach and nausea.
Tip: Make sure you have a doctor’s letter if required by the airline for your prescription medications.
It doesn’t matter how new and up to date your phone is, it’s not going to last forever when it comes to having charge especially when it comes to you using it as a source of entertainment. You most definitely not assume that it will survive the whole trip and that you’ll make it to your hotel in time. Airports normally have an area where you can charge your phone so make sure you pack your charger in your carry on. You might also find a connector below your seat in the plane.
These are only five things that you should be making sure you pack in your carry on, there are others that you may wish to consider, especially for long flights. What are some of your air travel essentials? I’d love to hear in the comments section.
