1. Can Sleep
Skanderborg Music Festival, Denmark

This one is for the beer lovers! Not only can you drink beer from a can you can sleep in one too! The beer structures provide accommodation for two people. Can Sleep, as it is called, is a 121 room hotel in Lake Skanderborg in Denmark open only during the month of August while the festival is ongoing.

2. Elephant Villa
Buttala, Sri Lanka

KumbukRiver is a 16-acre eco-lodge located in Sri Lanka’s primary wildlife sanctuary, Yala.

The locals have built a 40ft two-story structure known as the ‘Elephant Villa’, made entirely of wood and straw. It even has electricity and running water.

3. Hard Day’s Night Hotel
Liverpool, UK

This Beatles-inspired hotel is located in the band’s hometown, Liverpool, just around the corner from the famous Cavern Club where they played many gigs and you can take the Magical Mystery Tour which takes you around all the Beatles-significant places including some of their childhood homes.

This hotel is decorated throughout with artwork and photography of the band and its members.

4. Hotel Costa Verde
Costa Rica

Repurposed from an old 1965 vintage Boeing 727 that was originally lay to rest at the San Jose Airport, the suite inside the plane is a favourite for weddings, honeymoons and romance retreats.

The jungle canopy surrounds the suite which gives a sense of flight when viewed from inside.

5. Hotel Sidi Driss
Tunisia

This one is for Star Wars fans; the Hotel Sidi Driss offers a unique experience at the actual set of Luke Skywalker’s home, Tatooine (actually located in Tunisia).

Used in 1976 and 2000 for films Star Wars Episode IV and Episode II, many of the buildings and set accessories created for the films are still in place, and have been transformed into a place for guests and fans to stay and/or explore.

One should keep in mind these are not luxury accommodations but if you’re looking for both a place to stay and an experience, Sidi Driss is more than satisfactory.

6. The Chocolate Boutique Hotel
Bournemouth, England

The Chocolate Boutique is the world’s first chocolate-themed hotel, which opened in 2007.

Here, you can learn about the enchanting history of chocolate and take part in the culinary art of making chocolate truffles by hand from raw ingredients at the chocolate workshop.

7. Palacio de Sal
Bolivia

The Palacio de Sal (Palace of Salt) is located on the edge of the mesmerizing Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, and it’s a hotel built of salt blocks.

The hotel is made up of around 1 million blocks of salt, which are used for the floor, walls, ceiling and furniture (including beds, tables and chairs).

8. Jane Hotel
New York, USA

The Jane has a long history, first serving as a sailors’ hostel in the 1900’s. Now, more than a century later, The Jane is a ’boutique budget flophouse’. Modelled on ships’ cabins, each of the 50 single-berth rooms is a study in style, thrift and efficiency.

Owner and hotelier Sean McPherson bought the property in 2007, and restored it to its 1908 state. He admits that The Jane is “not for everyone”. Spacious it is not: single rooms are 50 sq ft and amenities are minimal. Room service consists of the menu of a nearby deli that delivers. But what the rooms lack in space they make up for in character. Quirky, tiny and a an experience; it might make you feel like you are part of a Wes Anderson film.

9. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort
Saariselkä, Finland

Nestled in the middle of nowhere, the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort offers one of the best views of the Aurora Borealis (AKA The Northern Lights).

Kakslattanen is famous for its glass igloos fitted with frost-preventative thermal glass walls and ceilings, keeping it warm and cosy despite being surrounded by snow. There’s also a toilet, but you’ll find the showers available in separate buildings.

10. Jumbo Stay
Stockholm, Sweden

Unlike the 727 private suite in Costa Rica, in Stockholm you can spend the night onboard a 747 jumbo jet offered as a more affordable and unique hostel experience.

There are 33 rooms in total, including the cockpit and the engines, as well as a communal lounge and on board bar.
Fun Fact: The plane was built in 1976, and was last operated by the Swedish airline Transjet before they went bankrupt in 2002.
