This Week’s Small Pleasures #55

Somehow I always end up doing all-day cooking projects on the hottest weekends. It was really productive though. Here are my small pleasures of the week:

1. Last week we bought this Pressure Canner and Cooker to start learning how to can for the first time. On Tuesday I had just gone to the grocery store and bought 2 pineapples and when I arrived home, I saw that the canner had arrived. We proceeded to can 1 whole pineapple right away for our first attempt which only made three pints. In spite of our mistake of accidentally putting two lids on one of the jars, it went pretty successfully. A few days later we canned 5 pounds of green beans. And yesterday we really stepped it up and canned 7 quarts of all organic homemade chicken soup! We’re excited to can all of the extra tomatoes we’ll get from the garden and many more things.

2. We also got our Water Filter in the mail and it is SO amazing. We are so happy with it and can’t recommend it enough.

3. We made a spontaneous trip to Astoria and enjoyed some food, ice cream and bookstore shopping where they sell my favorite incense.

4. My trial for ALOHA protein powder arrived and it was great. I’m not vegan but I really loved it. I would love to try their superfood chocolate and coconut water next. If you would like to also, you can get $20 off your first order with code MANI8 !

  1. I like that you shared your happiness. Now maybe canning is an American thing? How does this differ to putting in glass jars like say a chutney? What does it actually do I’m curious x

    1. Canning is process where you process food in jars in a way that they can be stored for at least a year without opening them. Some people do it for convenience, and to have cooked homemade food whenever, some people do it to prepare for emergencies, etc… They make great gifts too. You can do so many foods. There are two types: water bath canning and pressure canning with a pressure cooker.
